People's Movement Assembly-- Global Day of Action
Saturday, January 26, 10:00am

On Saturday, January 26, 2008, Atlanta, host city of the first US Social Forum, will be the venue for a statewide People's Movement Assembly, beginning with a caravan and rally at the State Capitol.
Initiated by the organizers of the annual Poor People's Day events at the Capitol and inspired by the year 2008 being the 40th anniversary of the historic Poor People's Campaign for Economic Justice launched by Dr. King, this multi-pronged effort seeks to bring the voice, aspirations, needs and demands of millions of working and poor people to the Georgia Capitol.
Following the caravan and rally, participants will meet to exchange views, plan ongoing actions and cement relationships and networks. Hundreds of volunteers are needed throughout the state to mobilize their communities.
Participation in the January 26 action is open to all who believe "ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE."
Complete the People's Movement Assembly Ballot!

Guitar loan

All right freakers !
Let's see if this tribe is more about community than it is about real estate ads (yuck).

My esteemed roommate from New York, Ross Williams, will be in town this week-end. This is much rejoicing on a variety of levels, for us and local bar owners, but unfortunately the bastard prefers to bring his golf clubs rather than his guitar, and golfing isn't exactly why we got along (let's face it, especially given the current water crisis : golf sucks). On the other hand, rock rocks. And no one plays acoustic rock better than Ross & I & a good botttle of single malt - that is, provided we have enough guitars (2). I have one already, but the golf clubs don't make good music.

So here is why i call to the L5P community : is there anyone out there who is willing to lend me a guitar for the week-end ? I promise i will take great care of it, and you'll be invited to a kick-ass jam.

Disclaimer : we cannot guarantee that the instrument will lend itself to politically correct songs, as in the now classic Rubber Glove Love :

http://www.7minds.org/open_decks/Rubber_Glove_Love.mp3

The US Social Forum is a very special kind of gathering: one that has never taken place in this country up to now. It isn't a conference with an agenda and a program of events; it's a gathering whose participants produce our own agenda and our own programs.

The mere process of planning, thinking, talking and preliminary organizing will move you, the people you're working with and the rest of us forward. The moment you think of an idea, you are already participating in the Social Forum.

WARNING IF YOU ARE NOT BLACK YOU WILL GET BOOTED IN THE PARKING LOT NEXT TO CAFE 428.

I just bought a home in the ole forth ward on Boulevard. I had heard of a cafe that feed the homelss and they need help as far as kitchen staff.

A friend of mine and I went to check it out to see how we could help. I said let go get coffee and Javaology and talk to the foks at 428. So we met up parked in the parking lot beside cafe 428. unknowing if we were white and parked in the lot we would get booted. Why do I say this.
Two black men pulled as we were getting out of our cars. They parked in the same lot as we did. We were tlaking to the staff about how we could help and the copule had breakfast and left. We left walked out and talked on the side walk and watched the black copule walk drive away. We then went to Javaology and had Coffe. When we got back to our cars they were booted and we had coffee in our hands. So you tell me whats wrong with this picture. We talked to the owner of Javaology he could not do nothing about it. But he does rent the lot. Hummmm Lets see you rent the lot you cannot do anything about it. And we were trying to find out information to support the area. We get a boot slaped on our cars when we try to help.

Can we say Racial discrimination because we are white.
Infiltrating little five

Hey all,

so it's official, I'm on my way down to Hotlanta from NY. Getting there Nov 28th or so...
And from the few discussions I had, it seems that there's only one place that makes sense for me to live in : LITTLE FIVE POINTS !

So, how does one go about finding an apartment in this lovely neighborhood ? I've been searching over craigslist with little success... I must be missing a keyword.
What's the secret, dear little-five-pointers ?

I'm totally late for work, so here's my question very briefly:

Don Bender of the L5P business assoc is tearing out all of that kudzu and other foliage out behind the parking lot on the hill that goes up to the soccer field. There are some really old steps that go up to the field that two people have been living under for a long time. He's telling them to get out and that they are tearing up those steps too.

This is school property I think...and without any green on it that hill gets totally eroded.

Does it really hurt so much to have a couple of old guys living under the steps?

Where will they go?

I went to little 5 for the first time when I was 13, I think. I was with my friend's mother, who - at the time - was Unitarian Universalist. She took me into a neighborhood not far from L5P. There was a common house, guard dogs, a garden and little sheds set up here and there across the (I'm guessing 3 or 4 acre) property. The people there seemed to be sufi, mostly, and one of them taught dance classes - though I'm not sure what kind of dance. In the common kitchen, a hippy guy in a vest and patchwork shorts was preparing fresh squash for dinner. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? What was this commune and where was is?

Fox hunt behind Carter center?

I drink okay? I admit it, i was hangin way backside of the carter center today in the cold Winter wind, drinkin a nice red ale, a place where the fuzz would not harass me for enjoying beer outdoors. And still , there in a ravine i was passing through, low and behold, a Red tailed fox runs out oh the brush and disapears like lightning.
I haven't sen any foxes since 1975 in the wild , and here in the city?
It was definatley a fox.
and later i saw a strange bird with golden inder coloring on it's wings, I think a wood pekker, but not one i have ever known before?
I was meditating? Perhaps the fox was a ghost?
I am linked there .
I found some rosemary too, I/m going to season some pork with it.

I hope perhaps others see the fox.
Tallyhoe!

Dear, all….

I am just beginning to learn about Chaos Magick. From what I understand of it so far, it is about tapping into your subconscious to get what you want out of life, like self-therapy. I think we've all in some way practiced Chaos Magick with positive thinking. It's not as hokey as I thought it would be, but really practical knowledge based on psychology, science, paradigms, etc. It's chaos so there are no rules, as far as, how you want to approach it.
it used to be level there back about 1987.

Ah, that one day a year that its easy to remember what it used to be like in Atlanta, and L5P in particular; before the Olymics.

The Community comes out from all the nearby rocks and pretends that its still 1995. Its so sweet. Like L5P christmas.

This year, we'll be set up at the Community Center at the bottom of the Hill on Euclid, right where the Parade starts, hooking you all up with excellent, affordable zombie costumes! Come on over to the Project Zombie Attack Tribe for details on this and other upcoming Zombie events!

The Loss of WRFG's - and Little 5 Points' - Ebon Dooley

89.3 FM | www.wrfg.org

Friday, October 13, 2006

Dear WRFG family:

I am saddened to tell you that on October 12 we have lost our own Ebon Dooley. He had not been well for some time, but we are stunned by his loss. His contributions to WRFG and demands for justice in Atlanta, the southern region, the nation and the world are incomparable. Ebon stands as one of the most brilliant and compassionate people I am fortunate to claim as my friend. But his friends are countless - so many of us have been fortunate to claim him as such.

Tomorrow (10/14) on WRFG we will devote the entire day, on all of our programs, for people to call in and share their Ebon stories - and there are many to be sure.

Ebon has played a critical role in Atlanta and the region's history. In the 1960's he created the first Black book store in the South; he was renowned for his poetry; he was focused on community centers in the city and their development such as the Arts Exchange, the Southwide Community Center, the Dunbar Center, the Little Five Points Community Center and others. He understood that these centers provided the opportunity for creative expression, community building and empowerment.

In addition to all of the above and much more, Ebon was one of the early organizers of WRFG. At the recent WRFG event where Ebon introduced Amy and David Goodman, I mentioned that Ebon is the heart and soul of Radio Free Georgia. This is almost an understatement! He has inspired us through his wisdom, his profound analysis and his kindness. So many of us at WRFG have been privileged to be his friend and privy to his political, racial and economic analysis coupled with humor and his constant radiant smile.

There is much to say about Ebon...and you will hear more about him in the days to come.

In the meantime, in addition to tomorrow being an opportunity for people to call in, we will have a special program on Tuesday, October 17 from 6-7 PM on Ebon's remarkable life. His family will soon announce plans for the services and we are also planning a community event to celebrate Ebon. These dates and times will be announced soon via e-mail and on WRFG's airwaves.

In peace and sadness,

Heather Gray, Board President

I want to have a little get together on my birthday in a few weeks, and would like a restaurant that is a bit exotic, but not super expensive. Ethiopian, or Middle Eastern, or Indian, or Thai...anything not traditional American food.

Any suggestions for a place in or near Little Five Points?

Help - Donate a BIKE Little Five Points!

Does anyone have a bike they want to get rid of in the hood?

It'd go to a non-profit that's 501c3'd (you could write it off). Plus it'd serve a person in your hood who has little, but would still never steal your bike.

I could come get it tomorrow night?

This person NEEDS a bike. I gave them the info to Rachael at SOPO Bikes and the person left me a message today as they were looking for it, it's hard to find, and odd hours - point being - they tried. Help me reward that effort!

PM me!!

Tales from L5P....

I may do this ocassionally, if it's funny stuff like this. We'll see...

Picture this: three volunteers wearing their volunteer outfits and everything, so uniformity is kind of there, walking through the Junk Man's parking lot...one volunteer is a hippie looking chic that's got a backpack on with food and clothes and other, various, volunteering items. The other two peeps are totally punk rock, tattooed, pierced, etc., and beautiful. We're on the look out for what we seek. Observation mode. I spot the weird scene of a scruffy, slightly overweight, middle aged, flanel-wearing, baseball hat-sporting, looking to be chewing tobacco perhaps, guy in a beat up old pontiac with what appears to be his father sitting shotgun. Old guy, white hair, glasses, kinda squinting and looking around...they both seem to be waiting for someone.

We finally start to cross their path. I'm making eye contact, I'm curious. The guy calls out to us "Hey"...we divert towards the car a bit, but not that close. Driver's seat guy goes "do ya'll know where the Twist concert is?". The male volunteer and I look at each other puzzled, b/c of course, we think we know where every concert is, and want to help these guys. Male volunteer goes "do you know what venue it's at? I could probably tell you where that is?" and I agree, and am looking intently at the driver guy for an answer. Driver guy "no, I don't...never mind, thanks anyway"...

We walk off down the street wondering WTF(?); as we're waiting for a light to change it hits me and I go "Dude, that guy was *totally* trying to buy weed from us!"...."maybe for Dad's glacoma"...and then we really wanted to help, but all we had in the bag was food and stuff, and it was volunteer time and all. I so couldn't hook that up anyway...

I hope that you got your bag 'redneck guys in the pontiac', coming to little five to score! God love ya...

Sunday, June 11th 2006
Maxwell/Mosher (former Squirrel Nut Zippers)
Live at Eyedrum
7pm - ALL AGES

More info: www.otterrockmusicmgmt.com/maxw....html
Purchase tickets: www.ticketalternative.com/Ticke...n.aspx

Maxwell/Mosher is comprised of Tom Maxwell and Ken Mosher, two of the original members of the now defunct musical phenomenon The Squirrel Nut Zippers. Maxwell wrote the tune "Hell" which put the Zippers on the map. After departing from the band in early 1999, Maxwell and Mosher took a short break and then released Maxwell's solo effort "Samsara". The release of "Samsara" was followed by a unforgettable tour featuring The Remember Quartet and Robert Sledge of Ben Folds Five. In 2004, they formed Maxwell/Mosher Publishing and have contributed to a variety of programs including A&E's "Family Plots", two Kanebo makeup commercials in Japan, Disney Channel Production's "Life is Ruff", and J. Todd Anderson's movie "My Mummy". In 2005 they released a new disc with 4 re-recorded Zippers classics and 12 Maxwell/Mosher originals.

On June 11th, the 2006 Atlanta Film Festival will be showing the short film "The Bread Squeezer" made by local filmmakers Kasia Kowalczyk and Tal Harris. Maxwell/Mosher created the film's soundtrack. "When we first heard Tom Maxwell's solo album (Samsara) after the break-up of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, we were flabbergasted by how cinematic it felt. We joked that it would be great to work with somebody as talented as Tom" says Harris. After sending Maxwell the script on a whim they got their wish. "The Bread Squeezer" tells the story of Andrew Peadbody, whose loving parents die in a tragic Christmas tree accident. He is taken in by his well-meaning, but extremely regimented Aunt Gertrude Crab. His life then spirals out of control as he becomes obsessed with squeezing bread. Fortunately for Andrew, the cashier at Pickle's Grocery has fallen in love with him, giving him love instead of bread. "The Breadsqueezer" was nominated for "Best Short" at the 2006 Vail Film Festival.

Maxwell/Mosher will be bringing their band, complete with tuba and drums, to perform at Eyedrum in support of "The Bread Squeezer" and their self-titled release. Look forward hearing plenty of SNZ classics with a fresh new twist!

As a newbie to the area, I recently had occasion to take photos to send to my friends who've never been to Little Five Points, and so put them up here:
http://www.zanestein.com/LittleFivePoints.htm

Nothing fancy...and I'm sure when I have been here longer I will decide on other photos that might capture the flavor even more.

But I just wanted to say, I love this place!

Me and some outreachers are going to be in your neighborhood tonight. We'll be looking for at risk youth, homeless kids and the like.

We appreciate any input L5P as a community can give us as to where the best places to look are, please don't post it on this board...just PM me or come out tonight and talk to us. Or any Tuesday for that matter. Tonight we'll be in plain clothes 'scouting', weeks to follow we'll be wearing purple tshirts. You could probably still pick the three of us out though. 6:30-9:00.

I know of a Great 2 bedroom in the L5P area, that is not yet listed....

but the question is: are you cool enough to be our neighbor?

Very nice 2 Bedroom on the Nice side of the Candler Park Neighborhood, near Ponce. Its currently being rented for 825.00; so you could expect that much or more. Benefits include a huge back yard, and cool laidback upstairs neighbors (us).

I'm doing this because I'd like to prevent living next door to yahoos. (in the bad way...) Si if'n you're a yahoo (in the bad way...) don't bother botherin' me!

otherwise, let me know if you're interested and i MIGHT give you some info!

TETRAGRAMMATRANCE: Realm Of Shadows Sat. March 4 Atl Ga

Following the phenomenal success of our first gathering @ Spring4th Center, Atlanta Psytrance embarks on v2.0 in a series of four events...

TETRAGRAMMATRANCE: Realm Of Shadows
with Live P.A. by Shapestatic

Your invitation to experience a mind-altering journey "Down The Rabbit Hole"

*With your pranksters in consciousness:

PSY ROOM:

• SHAPESTATIC - Live P.A.
With a stash bag of fresh tricks from their upcoming CD release, Kri and Alex (Bastard) are set to deliver some of the most future-forward thinking music ever produced! This mind-bending, sonic duo are certain to blow the hinges off your "Doors Of Perception" as you experience their live performance.

DJs...

• BABAR - TN (T.O.U.C.H. Samadhi)
A DJ/producer with 9 years of DJ experience, Babar brings absolute mayhem to the dancefloor. Aggressive and technical with a penchant for mind-twisting dark psychedelic - He has recently been playing live with Kri and Alex of Shapestatic, writing new material with them and by himself. Expect nothing less than raging full-on and a dark descent into the world of complex, emotionally provocative Psy! Also expect to hear some original material from him, with a vision of what's to come!

• Psyonic - NC (Lava/Solo Dojo/T.O.U.C.H. Samadhi)
Since the year 2000, DJ Psyonic has equipped his self with a full-on arsenal of "dark-a-delic" tunes along with mind-altering visuals. He is sure to shatter minds and blacken the third eye' of all who hit the dancefloor!!!

• IIKAH - AL (AtlPsy/Citrus Alchemy)
Half the orange of Citrus Alchemy, Iikah displays an incredible sense of independence in his hypnotic ode filled with tribal elves and disaster. 2 out of 3 psychonauts swear he changed their lives by exorcising the conservative out of them. Iikah is now guaranteed to be heard wherever a soundtrack is needed for late-night cosmic traveling pleasure. Prepare yourself for a glimpse overboard...

• PYITE - GA (AtlPsy)
Pyite is an Atlanta native with more than 4 years of DJing experience. After spending a year in the massive Japanese psytrance scene, he is eager to contribute to the rapidly growing Atlanta scene. His style varies from funky morning sets to dark, mind-bending
stomp-a-thons.

*** Non-stop, "eye-popping" Visuals conjured by Psyonic ***

I am in possession of a PowerMac 7200 circa 1997. This thing is one of those big, beige boxes with the rainbow apple on it (monitor and printer too!). This thing STILL works! ...but, it can only manage OS 9. Since we have an ibook, G3 and G4 in the house it is really never used and the only reason i've been holding on to it so long is because I had this fantasy of gutting it and building a gaming computer inside it.

I am now being told by the less appreciative members of my household that I need to do something with it to make room for some pink velvet couch. So... even though I don't wanna, I have to get rid of it.

If you are a nerd like me and are into these sorts of things I will gladly give this box to you to play with. It comes with the original apple monitor, keyboard and mouse. It also comes with the apple stylewriter printer (though I have no idea how you would ever find a printer cartridge) as well as an Epson flatbed scanner in perfect working condition. There is a 56k modem in there somewhere and all of the necessary cords and doo-dads.

Check your email or take it apart and do something artistic, my housemates don't care just so long as you are taking it away from me.

If you find yourself in Little 5 on a Friday night, please try to stop in at the Cafe Curtain Call. My acoustic band is playing there every Friday from 9 til midnight, starting Jan 6, 2006.

It's quite a relaxed atmosphere with a bar that serves beer ($2) and wine ($8 all you can drink!), and coffee/desserts.

The location is Euclid Ave, in the 7 Stages entrance, right next to Variety Playhouse. Currently there is no cover charge, and we play a wide variety of original music, mixed in with cover requests as well. The setting is intimate and casual, and the music ranges from soul, funk, blues, folk, and americana...so if that's your style i highly recommend stopping by, and i hope to see/meet ya there!

Atlanta Psytrance invites you to experience,
the first in a series of ground-breaking parties for 2006:

TETRAGRAMMATRANCE: Night Of Passage
A sacred, magical journey through Psytrance...

With your local, AtlPsy DJs:
============================

· PYITE (AtlPsy)
Pyite is an Atlanta native with more than 4 years of DJing
experience. After spending a year in the massive Japanese
psytrance scene, he is eager to contribute to the rapidly
growing Atlanta scene. His style varies from funky morning
sets to dark, mind-bending stomp-a-thons.

· PUSKARA (AtlPsy/Eschatone)
One of Atlanta's secret weapons is ready to be unleashed on
unsuspecting trancers foolish enough to wander onto the floor
unaware. Holding to a higher standard of musical quality and
composition in his track selection which results in a fuller punchier
set. Let the music speak for itself...

· MICHAEL CURRAN (AtlPsy/T.O.U.C.H. Samadhi)
A dj of over 10 years, Michael has performed at numerous indoor
& outdoor events throughout the southeast. As a resident of Asheville
NC's Touch Samadhi psytrance collective, Michael has earned a
reputation for well-programmed sets that span the spectrum from
the dark and dirty to full-on funk and all points in between.

· MOKSA (AtlPsy/T.O.U.C.H. Samadhi)
Emerging out of the mist, Moksa delivers pounding psychedelic
jolts that are irresistible foot stompers. It's this cloud of mystery
and suspense that captures the mind and commands the body.

hey everyone, my band is playing tomorrow night at Cafe Curtain Call, which is the wine/beer/coffee bar inside the 7 Stages entrance.
We're called HatsOff, and we play an original array of acoustic-mellow-folk-rock, featuring guitar, sax, flute, harmonica, etc. (as well as some select cover songs).
Curtain Call offers "bottomless" glasses of wine for $8, beers for $2, and an intimate atmosphere for live music.

We plan on making it a weekly gig (perhaps every Thurs), and also plan to have a night for an open jam on a weekly basis.

I hope to see y'all Saturday night!

The Star Bar

Okay, I've been a bit slack about spotlighting the local businesses. I'll try to catch up.

Today, we're having a look at the Star Bar.

I visit the Star Bar fairly regularly, as my housemate Mark is a regular at their amateur stand up nights and I usually tag along and videotape him. I usually enjoy the comedy, though some nights are better than others, and some of the regular comedians like Noah and Tanner are well worth the price of admission (which is admittedly free, but I do have to exert the effort to walk the quarter mile there which counts for something). I usually ditch out before kareoke though. Not my thing, though I did go once and ended up singing Tori Amos' Crucify.

They have cheap beer, and that's always a good thing. I can't complain about $2 cans of PBR. The service is pretty decent.

I've seens a bunch of good local rock/metal bands there and never paid more than $5 to get in for a show.

I need to run...so I'm cutting this short. Come share your tales of everyone's favorite hard rock coke den.

Just got here a few days ago from California. Have been checking out the Little Five Points area (or as I saw on a sticker in East Atlanta last night at the bar I went to "Little Fuck Points"). Anyone got any more freak friendly places to check out? I would also very much like meeting new people maybe we could hang-out at The Vortex or a coffee shop or something?? Also, very important: I need a job fast.. anything will do as long as they don't mind guys with tattoo's on their faces. Let me know if you have any suggestions.. Thanks! I like the weather here.. overcast but warm all the time, very nice..

The Vortex

Well, it's a day late but this week's Little Five Points business to get the spotlight is The Vortex. Why the Vortex? Because I was too lazy to go out and take a picture of the resturant I really wanted to spotlight so I used the first place I could find a picture on my hard drive.

Anyway, the Vortex is a bit upscale for my tastes but I gotta admit their burgers are damned good. I can't think of any that I've had that were better except maybe the ones I made for myself when I was working at the Dark Horse tavern...but when you make it yourself you can make it just right so that's not a fair comparison.

They have a pretty good beer selection, but to be honest I'd rather drink my own urine spiked with Everclear before drinking another pitcher of their house beer, Laughing Skull. Oh man is that shit vile...and I'm not really picky about beer either.

My favorite memory of the place, though, happened a few months ago when the SGATLiens crew reserved the patio to ourselves for the SGATLiens 2nd Anniversary party. There was about 20-25 of us and the debauchery got way out of hand and it pretty much turned into as close to an orgy as you could get with all (well mostly all) clothes still on. Some of the staff besides our waitress came out to just stand and watch. It was awesome madness and I'm surprised that we didn't get booted or banned.

Anyway, that's all the time we have. See you next week.

The Video Store

Every Tuesday I'm going to try to spotlight a business in the Little Five Points zone to give everyone a chance to voice some memories and opinions.

This weeks business is The Video Store...mostly because I happened to have a picture of it handy. For the longest time I thought this place was called The Paper Chase because it was the only thing on the building besides "The Video Store", but The Video Store shows up in every directory I can find as The Video Store, which has no doubt lead to many "Who's on first..." type situations.

Anyway, as video stores go The Video Store is dandy. It has a reasonable selection, though new releases are often rented out, and pretty standard prices. 99 cent for non-new release movies on Tuesdays is always nice for poor people like me. Best of all, for parents like me, feature rentals come with a free kids movie rental. That last bit, more than anything, is why they consistantly get our business.

Okay, I'm lying. They consistantly get our business because they're a two minute walk from my apartment and I'm lazy.

They also have a porn section, but who rents porn from a video store in this age of the internet? I've poked around in there anyway, though, and wasn't terribly impressed. It's like they stock their porn section by going to porn stores and raiding the clearance bin.

The guys that work there have never pissed me off or done anything that made think they were morons. That's high praise for video store clerks in my book.

They have a section of used videos and DVDs. Their used VHS tapes are dirt cheap and the used DVDs range from cheap to barely less than Target's new release prices. The selection is about as good as you'd find in a pawn shop.

Nutopia - Psytrance in Atlanta

The time is ripe for Atlanta to have it's own niche in the psytrance scene and why not?! All around the United States small psy collectives have been popping up. Groups of the young at heart just trying to share this amazing energy with others, most of them not for money, but out of love for the music and the respect for our sacred communities. Just about anybody that's ever been to a psytrance party can agree that there is something special, but it only works when we ALL contribute (even if it means just showing up to shake that groove thing of yours).

Atlanta has some pretty groovy spaces and places around here and we have the talent (djs, organizers, artists, dancers....all of US) to get it going. That's why we present to you hopefully the first of much more to come from our growing ATL psytribe. That's the catch though. Atlanta is a GROWING family and in order to grow bigger and stronger we need YOUR help and support. We have rented the space and committed a couple of dedicated djs, now we just need you! Your art, your dance, your ideas and thoughts, your specially unique creative energy! Understand, this party is just as much yours as it is ours. A growing brainchild of a few that just want to share their love of this genre with you. Our contribution to help stimulate and further Atlanta's psytrance needs. This party is fresh (when was the last time you got to dance on skates?) and brought to you all out of nothing but pure love for sharing this scene with the ATL area. Help us grow!

What:
DJ Moksa, Atlanta GA
Since 2000, he has embraced the Goa spirit by expanding his library of earth-vibrating tracks. Moksa's intimate knowledge of the powerful Psychedelic Trance style, and his appreciation of a seamless mix, contributes to his grassroots effort to spread love and energy to his fans. Moksa has a phenomenal style that matured through a

MICHAEL CURRAN, Atlanta, GA

Since then, he has managed to build a reputation for eclectic well-programmed mixes that span the range from light to dark, and from the hard-edged to the funky.

DJ IIKAH, Auburn, AL
"...Iikah, half the orange of Citrus Alchemy, displays incredible sense of independence in his hypnotic ode filled with tribal elves and disaster. 2 out of 3 psychonauts swear Iikah changed their lives by exorcising the conservative in them. Virtually unknown, he is now guaranteed to be heard wherever a soundtrack is needed for late-night cosmic traveling pleasure. Prepare yourself for a glimpse overboard…''”

PUSKARA: Atlanta, GA:eschatone

Howdy, I am visiting Atlanta next week. I hear the 5 points district is way cool. I am having my 1st date there with someone very special. She is driving in from Athens & I want the experience to be easy & stress free for her. I'd like to make a memorable & fabuloso.

I am hoping someone can help me plan my trip/date a bit? I would like to 1)find a hotel/motel/B&B to rest my weary head, 2) discover glorious places to visit, eat, hang out @ 5 pts 3) I think it would be neato to see the Botanical Gardens & Martin Luther King Jr memorial; are they far from here?

Any help & I will eternally grateful. Thank you- Davey G

As far as I know, my buddy will be doing comedy again at the Star Bar tonight and I'll be there too. The big guy broke his stand up cherry last monday and did great, so I recommend everyone pop over to show him some love as he tackles the stage again. Comedy starts at 9pm.

Everyone has to have their favorite haunts? What are your favorite places to eat/drink/shop/whatever in L5P?

Personally, I always hit Aurora for chai latte...Elmyr for drinkin' (and sometimes eating)...and Little Five Pizza for eating...I also spend a great deal of money on stuff at Criminal Records.

remember when this neighborhood was more than merely "cool"? I sure as hell do. if you do too, you have probably been here since the Early 90's like myself. Atlanta was so different before the Olympics; and L5P is a perfect example of how things have changed.

So if you've been in & around the Neighborhood since 1990 or so; give us all a shout out and tell us what you miss most about ye olden days. (I miss the point, but that's too easy...I miss the skinheads and punkers who kept the area dangerous and exciting and kept the yuppies out of the area.)

gentrification

in my city, atlanta, we're seeing the white flight in reverse. the metro has reemerged as the chic place to be. so all the white yuppies are migrating in from the suburbs. they're moving into fixer uppers and brand new stucco conominium atrocities in what have been predominantly low income minority neighborhoods. strip malls full of targets, bed bath & beyond, lowes, home depots, publix, krogers, etc are being erected in areas that most of their shoppers would've been afraid to drive through in 1995.

the glass half full interpretation of this phenomenon is "well the neighborhoods are being beautified and jobs are moving in." but unfortunately that affirmation is not realistic. for the ugly truth is as all this new development comes in the poor folks are being pushed out. property value raises too high for low income renters and owners to withstand this new paradigm. furthermore, pressure from city gov't capitalists and private realstate firms have caused the low to come down even harder on the poor (who are mostly black and hispanic). every week i hear of more homeless being arrested for jaywalking -- that's a bunch of fascist b.s. my white middleclass friends and i jaywalk all the time, even in front of cops and noon bats an eye. most of the public restrooms at parks and such have big evil locks on them and homeless are then arrested for relieving themselves outside. in the same vein many homeless are being arrested for walking on and/or being close to railroad tracks. obviously there is a big push against those that we as a society have ultimately failed to be good neighbors to.

the reverse white flight finds the homeless unsightly and fearsome. so it contributes to their continued persecution. while at the same time the raising property values push a lot of low income people out int6o the street.

this is a devastating phenomenon and it's hard to know what to do.

Just a reminder to everyone that I'll be at Aurora's next to Junkman's Daughter at 5PM today if anyone wants to join me for coffee.

I'll be trying this every week...though I'll probably be moving the time back to 7PM in the future or something since I get a lot of people saying they can't make it because they don't get off work 'til 6PM.

I'll keep doing this even if nobody ever shows up...it's not like ending up enjoying some chai latte by myself is the worst thing in the world...but it would be nice for it to actually pay off to extend the invitation now and then. It was a real pleasure meeting Laia the first time I did it.
