Hey all,
so it's official, I'm on my way down to Hotlanta from NY. Getting there Nov 28th or so...
And from the few discussions I had, it seems that there's only one place that makes sense for me to live in : LITTLE FIVE POINTS !
So, how does one go about finding an apartment in this lovely neighborhood ? I've been searching over craigslist with little success... I must be missing a keyword.
What's the secret, dear little-five-pointers ?

Re: Infiltrating little five
Fri, November 3, 2006 - 2:49 PMMy advice is to shift parameters to the exo-L5P area; "East Atlanta Village" (appropriately located in South Atlanta) and the Candler Park area are my suggested zones. There are some lofts and such like available in L5P, they are pricey.
The L5P of today is a far, far cry from the L5P of yesterday. The L5P of today makes a good deal of bank off of the rep of the L5P of yesterday - it reminds me of what happened to Burning Man after '95 or so.
If you could hit it like your namesake, there, though - that would rock: a good cleansing unstoppable wind is just what L5P needs.
I live right next to the Candler Park station; it's already starting to yuppify but there are still a lot of actual human beings left in effect. My landlord is a total anomaly for Atlanta - a great guy that takes care of his properties and doesn't scam us for ridiculous money for the "privilege" of living on his property.
Watch out for honkeys.
(I'm not really this bitter - but I play a curmudgeon on TV)

Re: Infiltrating little five
Sun, November 5, 2006 - 5:13 PMI have to second Loki's Candler Park / East Atlanta flag-waving. L5P is cool, but you can find cheaper rent just down the street and still be able to bike over & hang out - plus, there are plenty of cool shops & places to eat in those areas too.
Our local free community paper, The Creative Loafing might help:
www.print2webcorp.com/marketp...rch.aspx
I've heard some good things about this apartment rating site - that might help too:
www.apartmentratings.com/rate/...a.html
Hope this helps and good luck to you!

Re: Infiltrating little five
Mon, November 6, 2006 - 10:28 PMAll I have to say is stay away from Inman Flats apartments or any apartments for that matter associated with Living Intown Reality. They may be cheap for the area, but my wife and I lived there for two years and had more maintanance issues than you can believe, including but not limited to our apartment flooding four times, one time which required our kitchen to be torn out and excavated WHILE WE WERE STILL IN IT for a month. Nothing like trying to feed your children lunch when there's plumbers jackhammering through your concrete floor in what used to be your kitchen.

Re: Infiltrating little five
Tue, November 7, 2006 - 11:08 AMThere are many good neighborhoods in Atlanta. Little Five Points is very cool but is more commonly known than it used to be.
East Atlanta, though still very much an area in transition, was over-priced a few years ago but that hysteria seems to have died down now.
Decatur is a wonderful area, in the city and yet, not.
I'm not familiar with NY but to compair neighborhoods in the SE to the SW: L5P is the Venice Beach of Atlanta.
If you have money, Candler Park, Virginia Highlands and Morningside are great neighborhoods. Virginian Highlands is kinda like the Melrose of Atlanta.
Does that help any? -

Re: Infiltrating little five
Wed, November 8, 2006 - 10:32 AMHey all,
yes, it all helps a tremendous lot.
My main constraint is that I do not want to buy a car, at least not right now...
I know, "what a utopian !". Well, I have to be : it's the only way to change the world. I work on global warming, ya know, so driving around like the doo-dah man is kinda like a chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children that tries to screw young pages. Oh sorry, I forgot to say that I wear my political colors high... is there a neighborhood I should avoid ?
More pragmatically, there is enough shit that I have to deal with right now that buying a car is the last time-and-money-sink I need.
I'll use Flex cars (www.flexcar.com/default.aspx if I really need to. Later, I'll figure out a biosediel alternative. But for now it's 2 wheels and thigh-power.
So what i think I need is a neighborhood where I can :
1) bike to work (Georgia Tech) from
2) do groceries when I get off work ( around 8 or 9 pm)
3) go hear music and hang out with kind-hearted human beings several nights a week without having to spend 1h in transportation.
From several conversations with acquaintances, it looked like L5P was just what the doctor ordered, but if there is something cheaper and more authentic, hell, I won't shoot myself in the foot.
Your advice is very well taken, thanks for all the recommendations - I'll take a serious look at them.

Re: Infiltrating little five
Fri, November 10, 2006 - 7:50 AMokay yeah.
within your critera, L5P is looking like a good bet for you. If you can actually bike, and don't mind going up a slight hill through a shady area, East Atlanta is still an option.
One of the best things about L5P is its Proximity to the MARTA line (I also ride a bike and take public transit to work). however, Decatur also fits that bill, as its just a couple stops further East along the line. That doesn't completely solve your Grocery issue, as L5P is now equipped to, but it puts you closer to BETTER food at the Dekalb Farmer's Market. East Atlanta is Close to L5P, just on the other side of 20 south of the Train line, So it has most of the advantages of L5P, just being a bit further away. Consider also, that the 24 hour Kroger (that's a grocer) that solves one third of your requirements is immediately next to a MARTA station, and technically, you could take advantage of it from any of those areas on your way home.

Re: Infiltrating little five
Sun, November 12, 2006 - 4:33 PMI have visited the DeKalb farmer's market with stars in my eyes. It is one of the things that sold me to Atlanta. But it's not a place I'd go to every day either. Decatur looks great.... heard great things about the music/bar scene down there. But isn't it a little far from GaTech ?
The only two people I know in Atlanta live in Virginia Highlands. It's only by anticonformism that I am not looking for sthg in that lovely neighborhood - though I keep options open. I really like neighborhoods that have a street life, you know, i'ts another thing ; being able to step out of your house in your wardrobe, sunglasses and slippers on a sunday morning, and walk only a few blocks to go buy a pint of milk and bacon and eggs to cure that hangover, buy your newspaper along the way and sit in a jam session for an hour or two.
But hey, let's be realistic here - we're not in a Coen brothers movie and my name is not The Dude.
So does anyone have a landmark in East Atlanta Village that I can use for my google mapping ? Better still, is there a useful map of Atlanta with the name of all these treasured neighborhood ?
Cheers

Re: Infiltrating little five
Sat, November 11, 2006 - 4:22 PMMy wife and I discovered little 5 points on a date weekend in May. We moved from California 2 years ago and this was a breath of fresh air (after being surrounded by so many Christian Conservatives) We love the area so much that we decided to purchase a rental property. If it was just the 2 of us we would probably be considering living there ourselves.
The rental property is a the Pointe (which is on the corner or Euclid and Moreland). This building was built in the 20s and has been completely refurbished. The owner kept all of the old charm (floors, brick walls, tubs, ...). It is very similar to other buildings you may be familar with in NY from the same era.
The condo is closing in early December. We are currently looking for a tenant. This might be a good match for you and for us.

Re: Infiltrating little five
Tue, February 20, 2007 - 4:08 PMYou might want to check out the Home Park neighborhood of Atlanta. It is basically right beside Georgia Tech (located between 10th and 14th street). You could walk to work, or even better... Bicycle! It's only about a fifteen minute bike ride to Little Five Points and Poncy Highland. My friend currents lives off State Street in Home Park. It's one of my favorite neighborhoods because it's filled with mostly grad. students and it's nice. There aren't any shops or resturants in the actual neighborhood, as opposed to Little Five Points or East Atlanta... But in the Georgia Tech area there's a Publx, Barns & Noble, and an American Apparel. Oh, yeah... There's a whole foods like ten minutes (on bicycle) off Ponce, and if you're looking for a farmer's market there's a market off Edgewood in downtown. It's safe and not filled with the stupid fucks who hang around L5P (not to sounds like a judgemental dick or anything, but L5P is turning in the cool place for high school kids to go down and buy bowl's and bongs and hang out and start drama... It's basically filled with drama). My friend is moving out on the 15th of March, and I'm pretty sure his place is going back up for rent... You should check it out.

Re: Place for Rent in Little 5 Points
Sat, November 18, 2006 - 1:08 PMDid you get a place yet?
East Atlanta Community Assoc. homepage - lots of addresses in there.
eaca.net/index/home
A few L5P apt places in here...including Oak Pointe Apts. I lived there for a while, loved it...but I *think* that they're all 2BRs and priced as such, I needed a roommate the whole time.
www.4wallsinatlanta.com/apartm...-ga.htm
And, the best place I ever lived, North High Ridge. The landlords and maintenance are super-cool...I think that they have studios for under $700. I had to be on a waiting list years and year ago but you could at least try.
