I went to little 5 for the first time when I was 13, I think. I was with my friend's mother, who - at the time - was Unitarian Universalist. She took me into a neighborhood not far from L5P. There was a common house, guard dogs, a garden and little sheds set up here and there across the (I'm guessing 3 or 4 acre) property. The people there seemed to be sufi, mostly, and one of them taught dance classes - though I'm not sure what kind of dance. In the common kitchen, a hippy guy in a vest and patchwork shorts was preparing fresh squash for dinner. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? What was this commune and where was is?

Re: a place I went when I was little....
Tue, February 6, 2007 - 7:06 PMHmmmm. Not sure. Loki might know. There's a(n) EU church across from Candler Park county club (I mean golf course)...but that place doesn't have the acreage you're talking about - I don't think.
The sufi dances are off of Shallowford Rd these days. So if they were in Candler at that point (which does seem very likely) they have moved.
*it JUST struck me* maybe the LandTrust? I have never been myself...but it sounds like maybe this is what Ash is talking about?? -

Re: a place I went when I was little....
Sun, February 11, 2007 - 12:23 PMA unitarian affiliate not far from L5P can only be the EU congregation Suz mentioned, right there next to Candler Park. I attended GA's first overt same-sex marriage there many years ago, for instance. It became a very dyke-centric congregation over time; I have no idea if it's even still there. I'll check, just for curiosity's sake.
I only know of two major UU istallations, otherwise, in Atlanta: 'Northwest' and UUCA. Neither is anywhere near L5. The Existentialists (if they still exist) have not exhibited that awesome spirit of commonality and community, I'm afraid, over the years, but one can forgive / understand in that - this is GA and people are *already* hostile to UUs, much more so to gay ones. Thing is: I bet the meat of the rampant haters tastes crappy. What to do? Kill them but *don't* eat them. That's all I can really say. I bet there is less community-opprobrium toward fringe communities in the area than there used to be though: there are a *lot* more latinos than there were back then and I note they just don't seem to give much of a fuck for what the gringos are up to in the sack.
That makes me wonder, though: "why hasn't there been a strong upsurge of latino interaction / infusion into the underground or the countercultures of L5P?" Why have we no Atlanta latino magical realists? Anarchists? Painters? Is it that we suck in general, or are the fuckers making their own scene on the QT? Fucking spy-ass-bastard-arty-fucks. GIVE ME A CULTURE, PLEASE, thanks. I had hoped the NOLA escapees would whip up a quick scene but no.
